The month is observed with media, local events, and film screenings.<sup id=\"cite_ref-MHA_May_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mental_Health_Awareness_Month#cite_note-MHA_May-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Mental Health Awareness Month began in the United States in 1949 and was started by the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mental Health America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mental_Health_America\">Mental Health America<\/a> (MHA) organization (then known as the National Association for Mental Health). Each year in mid-March Mental Health America releases a <a href=\"https:\/\/mhanational.org\/mental-health-month\"><i>toolkit of materials<\/i><\/a> to guide preparation for outreach activities during Mental Health Awareness Month.
